Random Moments: Top 10 Best TV Shows Ever

I’ve decided to share my top 10 favorite television shows with the world.  I mean, I’ve shared everything else so why not!

After each selection, Ryan gives his two cents on whether he agrees or not.  Yes, we do disagree on our television shows!

10) Cheers 
How could a show that took place in a bar 99% of the time make me feel like home? It took a while for Cheers to find themselves, but it just got funnier and funnier with each subsequent year, i.e. when Woody and Rebecca joined the cast. When I was a kid they used to show the reruns three times before my bedtime and I watched them all.

Ryan’s two cents: This was definitely a good show.  Truthfully, I am a bit biased because growing up I only had 3 channels and NBC was the only channel out of the 3 that came in clear.  With that being said, this was an NBC show and I probably watched each episode (after Coach died) live week by week.  I honestly had no idea who the Coach character was until I later saw reruns.

9) American Horror Story
Some of the actors were like the National Lampoons of FX, but reversed – they came back, but as different characters. It was confusing at first, but each season has a new theme that sucks you in. The season 1 opening intro and theme song is probably the scariest I’ve ever seen, and just as scary as scary movies out nowadays.

Ryan’s two cents: I really liked season 2, the rest was just weird.  

8) The Golden Girls
I didn’t watch this show in real time, but it quickly became one of my favorites. Even today when it comes on TV, I just HAVE to watch it. Just when I think Rose has run out of stories from St. Olaf, she never fails to recall with precise accuracy and detail the stories from her days in her little town in Minnesota. She seems oblivious to her roommates’ moaning and groaning as she starts off with “Back in St. Olaf…” But Rose doesn’t give a fuck. It reminds me of my stepfather-in-law who always had endless stories of his Army days, and they were soooo detailed. I later found out that he had only been in the Army for three years. What? He talked like he retired with 30+ years under his belt. Ryan bought me the entire series for my birthday one year. I know every single episode use in the intro and would mouth the words they said as it played. What a nerd.

Ryan’s two cents: This was another NBC show and I remember my mom loved it.  I probably watched every episode as they aired, but I only watched it because it was better than the alternative, watching nothing.

7) Friday the 13th: The Series
This series had nothing to do with the actual movie, because if it did, not much could possibly go on that hadn’t already been played out in the first two or three movies. I watched this show because Mickey was a smoking hot redhead who always had fabulous hair, cute outfits, and long, manicured nails, and because of that she always looked like she never wanted to hold things too tight. I always thought Mickey and her cousin, Ryan, had a relationship that was awkwardly close, and my feelings were confirmed when they pecked each other on the mouths while casually saying goodbye to each other. In my grade school mind I thought it was creepily incestuous lolol.

6) Flight of the Conchords
You can’t help but feel sorry for this folk duet from New Zealand trying to make it in the Big Apple with their part-time manager / part-time New Zealand consulate by their side. The first time I showed Ryan this, he loved it. We don’t agree on too many TV shows, watching just a handful of them together. But they’re so quirky and almost pathetic that we couldn’t help but love them.

Ryan’s two cents: Even though I am not the biggest fan of comedy in the form of music, this show was entertaining.  I watched it because Venice made me and some of the songs were hilarious.  However, there was a reason why this show was canceled so quickly.

5) Seinfeld
I cringe at these four friends because I know if I ever had friends like these, I would probably unfriend them on Facebook. Ryan and I used to watch this when we first got married and we just loved it. I even started recording the reruns. But since this was before they had episode listings online, I had to write a description instead of the season/episode number (“George gets blamed for killing fiancee,” “Jerry and his date, Man Hands,” etc.)

Ryan’s two cents: This show was great.  A show about nothing.  To be honest, it really was like an upgraded cheers, except in the cafe downstairs or Jerry’s living room.  I also loved Curb Your Enthusiasm, another show by the co-creator Larry David.

4) King of the Hill
I went through phases of who my favorite character was: Hank, Boomhauer, Dale, or Bill. It was like reliving New Kids on the Block all over again. The show has its raunchy moments, but in the end, it always had a touching moment of humanity that I don’t think could ever be matched. I adore Peggy Hill because she reminds me of myself: slightly obnoxious, somewhat of a know-it-all, and if you mess with her husband, she won’t hesitate to pounce on you.

Ryan’s two cents: Venice forces me to watch this show, and although I don’t mind it, it wouldn’t have made a top 20 list for me.  It’s simple, it’s funny, but I barely remember an episode.

3) The Office
How any office could run under the regime of Michael Scott is beyond me. Apparently the show itself couldn’t. Still, I loved each of them in their own eye-rolling kind of way. I introduced Ryan to this show during season 2 and we started watching it together. This is especially near and dear to us because Ryan was in the show…sort of. In the episode where Jim creates an avatar in “Second Life,” his avatar is wearing an outfit that Ryan had created. The show gave credit to Ryan, of course, and he became a part of “The Office” history.

Ryan’s two cents:  Great show.  I quit watching after Michael left.  Up until that point, this show was one of my personal favorites.

2) Breaking Bad
You’ll see Walter White evolve from a squirrely chemistry teacher into a meth kingpin, and you’ll never be torn between two extremes like never before. This was the first series Ryan and I binged-watched on Netflix, having had so many heated discussions on whether or not we were on Team Walter or not.

Ryan’s two cents: This was easily one of the best shows on television.  Start to finish.

1) The Walking Dead
I first saw a little blurb of this little show called “The Walking Dead” in an October 2010 issue of “Entertainment Weekly” and thought, “I’m going to give this show a try” and just hoped that it wasn’t some awfully-put-together SyFy B-rated version. Since that first episode, I was hooked, never missing a show as it aired live. A first for me. This is also the first show that we’ve watched as a family. We make an event out of it: popcorn, candy, lights off, no one talks or they get the fuck out of the room.

Ryan’s two cents: The only show I really watch each week religiously at this point.  We actually have Walking Dead party nights in our house. Popcorn, candy, soda, and quiet time.

I will not do a list of my own, but let me throw a few shows out there I feel belong on this list.  Game of Thrones, Son’s of Anarchy, Sopranos, The Wire, and The A-Team.
